CNC milling, or Computer Numerical Control milling, is a manufacturing process that uses computerized controls and rotating multi-point cutting tools to progressively remove material from a workpiece and produce a custom-designed part or product. This process is suitable for machining a wide range of materials, such as metal, plastic, wood, and glass, and can create a variety of custom-designed parts and products.

Here’s a brief overview of how CNC milling works. We have broken down the process into 5 steps;

  1. Design Creation: The process begins with creating a 2D or 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model of the part to be manufactured.

  2. Conversion to CNC Program: The CAD design is then converted into a CNC-compatible format, typically using CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software. This software generates the G-code, which is the programming language that controls the CNC machine.

  3. Machine Setup: The workpiece is secured to the milling machine's worktable or a fixture, and the cutting tools are installed in the machine's spindle.

  4. Execution: The CNC machine follows the programmed instructions to move the cutting tools along multiple axes (typically 3 to 5 axes) to cut and shape the workpiece into the desired form.

  5. Finishing: After the milling process, the part may undergo additional finishing processes, such as sanding, polishing, or coating, to achieve the desired surface finish and properties.
